If you struggle with mobility issues, you want to do everything you can to make your home a mobility friendly and safe place for you. There are a lot of changes you can make around your house to make it easier for you to get around, and some of the most important changes will be in your bathroom. The bathroom can be a very dangerous place, and you want to replace those dangers with mobility-friendly options.
Replace faucet handles, door knobs, and drawer handles
Faucet handles, door knobs, and drawer handles can be hard for some people to work. If you have arthritis or other mobility issues that make it hard for you to work these, then you want to have them replaced with ones you'll find easier and less painful for you to work.
Consider a comfort height toilet
If you find your average height toilet is hard for you to sit down on and get up from due to your mobility issues, you should have it replaced with a comfort height toilet. This will add a few more inches to your toilets height that makes it easier on your back, knees, hips, and your balance.
Widen the bathroom door
If you use a walker or a wheelchair, you should have your door and door frame widened. The more available room you have to move around safely with your aides, the less the chances will be of you getting injured while you are using the bathroom.
Have grab bars installed
You should have grab bars installed in certain places throughout your bathroom. This is one of the most helpful things you can do to your bathroom to create a safer environment for you. The grab bars should be installed next to your toilet, next to the shower, and inside of the shower.
Use non-slip mats and tape
Put a non-slip mat inside of your shower. This will help to prevent you from slipping while you are getting into and out of the shower. You should also make sure the area outside of the shower and in front of the sink is non-slip. You can do this by applying non-slip tape to the floor.
Install more lights if necessary
When you have mobility issues, you want to be sure you have great lighting in the bathroom. If you don't have enough lights, it's important you have some more installed.
Consider a walk-in bathtub
If you find it difficult to get in and out of your bathtub, then you should really consider having a walk-in bathtub installed. This type of tub has a door that opens so you can walk right in without the need to climb over the side, avoiding the chance of falling and inuring yourself.
